Goodbye 2017

Greetings from Singapore!
We were last here 6 months ago and I thought it would finally start to feel a bit strange to come back (after nearly 1 whole year since we moved away from the little red dot 📍) but nope, I still feel so relaxed and content as soon as we land as if no time has passed at all. Wandering around the places we used to frequent most evenings just feels like we were here last weekend. It’s an odd feeling, but also a lovely, warm, fuzzy one. Bring on the gin and our NYE celebrations tonight – thank you Kylie & Dan for having us!
As 2017 is coming to an end I’ve woken up this morning (THE LAST DAY OF THE YEAR!?!?) feeling totally nostalgic about the 12 months we’ve just experienced. This has definitely been my best year on earth so far, sprinkled with a few crappy bits of course because hey that’s life and it would be a massive lie to say it’s been nothing but perfect.
So, as I sit here eating my bran flakes and banana, here is a list of 26 moments from my 26th year (we’ll get the most obvious one out of the way first).
Enjoy!
1️⃣ I jumped (hesitantly) into my biggest adventure yet – CHINA.
2️⃣ I experienced my first Chinese New Year and loved seeing the way that it’s celebrated (we also got a whole week off work, so that was pretty great).
3️⃣ I decided to start a blog to document our adventures and I’m so glad we’ll always have those posts to look back on.
4️⃣ I went home to visit my family and had a meltdown. It was bad. I was so overwhelmed with everything going on and refused to go back to Guangzhou. But here I am!
5️⃣ I left my first full time job after 7 years(!!) and started working for a great company.
6️⃣ I visited more parks this year than I think I’d ever been to in my life. China loves a good park!

7️⃣ I spent far too much time on Pinterest planning our destination wedding. There were some moments where I wanted to pull my hair out but it was so much fun.
8️⃣ We spent the most incredible week in Thailand with our families and closest friends. It was truly a once in a life time trip and I could never thank everyone enough for making the journey to spend it with us – we’re so lucky. ❤️
9️⃣ I became someones WIFE and had the most perfect wedding day I could have imagined (#7 was worth it).

1️⃣0️⃣ The post wedding blues are a real thing. Google it!
1️⃣1️⃣ I took my first trip within China to a beautiful town called Zhangjiajie. The scenery was truly breathtaking and like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

1️⃣2️⃣ I was lucky enough to visit South Korea, Japan & Macau for the first time!
1️⃣3️⃣ I’ve discovered I have a love for Hong Kong – it feels so much like the UK, it’s quite comforting.
1️⃣4️⃣ I found out that I have a polyp in my gallbladder and Google told me I could potentially die.
1️⃣5️⃣ I experienced (expat) healthcare in China and it was excellent! Google was wrong.
1️⃣6️⃣ I made new friends and realized that it doesn’t have to mean the end of the world if you loose old ones.
1️⃣7️⃣ I didn’t let squatting toilets defeat me – I CONQUERED THEM!!!
1️⃣8️⃣ I started learning Chinese Mandarin and can now have basic conversations with taxi drivers and the cashier in Starbucks.
1️⃣9️⃣ I learnt to celebrate every victory in life, no matter how small (ordering a coffee in another language is incredibly satisfying and deserves a self-high-five).
2️⃣0️⃣ I became way more adventurous with food – but I still haven’t tried chicken feet.
2️⃣1️⃣ I visited Oxford for the first time and loved the history and architecture.
2️⃣2️⃣ I watched my big brother get married and I gained a sister.

2️⃣3️⃣ I experienced another big holiday in China – Mid Autumn Festival – and tried my first Mooncake (lotus paste and salted egg yolk, quite delicious).
2️⃣4️⃣ I tried Dragon Boat racing and could barely walk the next day. SO. SORE.
2️⃣5️⃣ We spent our first Christmas alone. I was sick and we had to work but it was still a lovely day.
2️⃣6️⃣ I truly pushed myself to my limits and found that I’m stronger than I ever thought I was.
Leave me one of your favourite memories of 2017 in the comments below, I’d love to know! ☺️
Whether this is the first post of mine that you’re reading or you’ve been along for the ride since the beginning, thank you so much for following our adventures! I’m looking forward to seeing what 2018 has in store for us.. and writing about it, of course!
I hope you have the most wonderful NYEcelebrations and the very best New Year! 🎉 Lots of love,

englishgirlinchina XO
