The Cockroach Who Came To Tea

I’m slacking with my blog – it’s been 2 weeks since I last wrote one! We’ve been so busy doing things I just haven’t had time to sit and write about them, even though we’ve experienced lots to fill a blog post!
A few weekends ago we welcomed our first guest into the apartment – a cockroach!! Needless to say it was not invited and I was horrified when I spotted it in the kitchen. I was holding an empty glass and for some reason wanted to launch said object at the thing, but of course I didn’t. I gave it some thought and decided I’d rather not be on my hands and knees clearing up glass while a cockroach was running around me 😱.
After trying, and failing twice, to suck the little bastard up with the hoover we found the most hilarious little traps that looked like a bungalow. They had a yellow roof and a drawing of a cat on top, because obviously the cockroach would see them and think “perfect, a holiday home with a friendly resident cat!”. The traps didn’t work and we haven’t seen it since so I think it picked up that he wasn’t welcome!
Despite the cockroach drama we’re really feeling settled these days. I’ve been trawling the internet and have made a list of places we need to check out in the city – mostly restaurants and coffee shops because we like to eat πŸ˜‹. I love how many independant, “boutique” coffee shops are dotted around. They all seem to have super cool interiors and are full of Chinese teenage girls taking selfie after selfie after selfie. It’s quite amusing to watch them/a little bit irritating when they’ve been sat there for a good 40 minutes doing it.
There are bikes all over the pavements and streets here that can be hired for 10P a time – its such an easy way for us to be able to explore our neighbourhood and check out all of the places on my list. Some people seem to find it quite amusing when they spot us, as if it’s a total shock to them that Western people can ride bikes too.

Even though, as I mentioned, we’ve been feeling more settled I had a situation last Friday that brought me crashing back down to earth. We were heading off (on a bike ⬆️⬆️) to our early morning CrossFit workout and I had to get some cash out of my bank account when we arrived. I put the card into the machine followed by my pin – no problem so far – then I selected the amount of money to withdraw and the countdown in the corner of the screen got stuck at 1. My card was in the machine and it wouldn’t give it back. I pushed a ton of keys, slapped my hands against the screen (of course that didn’t help but it made me feel a bit better) and nothing. Meanwhile mild hysteria was beginning to set in and I started to panic, thank goodness Toby was with me otherwise I think I would have had a slight meltdown. We spotted a telecom system and pushed the button for help like it said on the sticker. Nope. She didn’t speak a word of English, though that didn’t stop me from veeeerrrryyyyy slowly explaining that my card was stuck and I needed it back. I was debating whether or not to leave the machine and go home or wait (it was 5:50AM and the bank didn’t open until 11AM, clearly I wasn’t thinking straight).
Luckily after about 15 minutes the machine started beeping and spat my card back out πŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ I don’t think I have ever been so relieved! During the whole episode it hit me like a ton of bricks that we’re in a foreign country and something simple like calling my bank would be near enough impossible. We’ve finally sorted out continuing with Mandarin lessons which will start next Saturday so hopefully if I desperately need to communicate with someone in future it should be a little easier.. each class will be 4 hours on a Saturday morning. You’re jealous, aren’t you 😏
I hope you’re all having a great weekend and nobody’s bank cards get stuck in a machine πŸ‘πŸΌ xo

Funny how you and Toby attract little creatures. What was it a little gecko thing in Singapore. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. I would have really panicked as well with card getting stuck. Keep the little house traps for any other little creatures. Xx
