1 Month Down!

We have now officially been living in China for 1 whole month 🎉🎉🎉
I can’t believe how quickly it’s gone. I have to admit each week has been a little bit easier than the last and though we’re not 100% settled yet I don’t think it’s going to be as difficult as we first thought. Ask me when we’re through with the 2nd month though and I might say otherwise 😉
The Chinese New Year break is officially over and we were back to work on Friday, which means exploring will have to go back to being a weekend only thing!
On Thursday we went to a place I’d read about called Shamian Island (it’s technically a sandbank, but Island sounds cooler). The history there dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries when the Qing Dynasty split the island in two, giving some to the French and some to the English. The buildings are old, European colonial style mansions and some of them looked incredible.

I almost forgot that we were in China while we were walking around, apart from the large groups of Chinese tourists (some even took photos of US!).
The island is so small that we walked around it twice in only a few hours, but it’s definitely somewhere I would go back to again! Some buildings had plaques with a description of what used to be inside – some were homes of rich European businessmen, others were home to the American/German/Soviet Union consulate and others used to be banks. My inner history nerd definitely came out as I ran towards any plaque I caught sight of.

This was possibly the coolest Starbucks building I’ve ever seen – disappointingly there was no plaque on the outside so I have no idea what it used to be!!! But as much as I wanted to go in we’ve turned our backs on Starbucks, it’s all about Pacific Coffee now 😍
Other than visiting our new favourite coffee shop multiple times, building another piece of IKEA furniture and successfully ordering proper meat from an online grocery store (yippeee!) we’ve not been up to much else.
I’ve caught a horrible cold/virus so I’m feeling a little bit rough now, hopefully it passes soon and I’ll be feeling healthier in no time 😷
Happy Monday XO
